The Story Behind Journey to Imperfect

Perfectionism is real, friends, and it often remains hidden in our lives. Join me today and find out how I discovered my own problem with perfectionism. Then join me at Journey to Imperfect where you’ll discover God’s love and grace for help in overcoming it.

Hi Friends!

Today I’m honored to be sharing the story behind the creation of Journey to Imperfect through a guest post at my friend, Natalie Venegas’ blog, Milk & Honey Faith. Natalie’s writing has been an inspiration and encouragement to me. She’s one of the most generous people I’ve met and she has a heart for inspiring others to grow in faith and to step out into their God given callings.  You’ll see this through her writing just as I have seen it personally as we’ve had the opportunity to get to know each other.

Natalie also has a heart for helping women connect with each other. She does this through her a monthly post on her blog called the “Faithful Feature.” I’m honored to be a part of that today!

It’s an imperfect place, but that’s okay because we are not called to be perfect. We are called to be complete, and that happens through our relationship with Jesus. Click To Tweet

  1. I just found this blog and I look forward to reading more about how to stop thinking perfection is the key to all that is good and move to seeing that relationship (especially one with God) is the only key that really works. Because I never ever achieved perfection (not even close) it’s taken me a very long to realize that I even am a perfectionist. My eyes were closed for so long. I feel like I have so much to make up for. I still struggle with all the time lost trying to just “be good” and the rest would all work out. It is a struggle every single day for me to live in the present and not look back or forward.

    1. Trace, my eyes were closed for a long time too. I was in my mid 40’s before I came to understand what perfectionism was doing in my life. I also looked back and had a lot of regrets. But I came to see things from a different perspective after a lot of prayer. First, I realized that God wants us to look forward, not back. (Hebrews 12:1-2) When we go through things, we learn from them and it makes us stronger and helps mature us in our faith. Our mistakes are powerful in the hands of Jesus. We’re forgiven in Him and that sin no longer holds us back. Because we are forgiven, we are free. God can then do things through us and often will bring us into contact with others who need that one small thing we can say or do because we’ve been there and we understand. The mistakes we feel regret over are full of possibility with God. (Romans 8:28) As far as the regret, we have to be careful of lies from the enemy. He’s out to defeat and discourage us in any way he can. He is going to keep us all bound up with discouraging thoughts about our pasts. Satan wants us to live in the past. Jesus wants us to live full of hope and expectation about the future. We have to remember that in Jesus, there is freedom. (John 8:36) He has set us free from our sins and that means there is grace for us. If we ask Him, he will help us let go of the past and move forward into the things that he has planned for our future. Often those things God has planned for us, would not be possible without the past we went through. I would not have been able to write the article you found today without my past. So those parts of my life that I had so much regret over are now being used in ways I could have never imagined. That’s the power of Christ! That’s the kind of future each one of us can step into when we depend on Jesus. This is a good verse to repeat and remember: “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Phil 3: 12-13. I really appreciate your comment, Trace and I think it will help encourage others. We all need to know we are not alone. You will find lots of friends here who understand! Blessings!
