7 Bible Verses for Confidence When You Need It
It was a hard day, and Bible verses for confidence would have helped me so much—if only I’d had such a list at the time. I was 19 years old, putting a lot of time and effort into getting good grades. I’d given the required presentation for my college music class all about the history of the banjo—complete with an instrumental performance. Unfortunately, my nerves got the best of me. The banjo playing was a disaster. I felt embarrassed and utterly humiliated.
The most crushing blow came as I overheard a classmate talking about me. His words seized my confidence, holding it captive under their weight. As much as I loved playing my instruments, I thought to myself, “I’ll never play in front of people again.”
Maybe for you as well, there was something important—and it didn’t go like you had planned. Perhaps it wasn’t a public performance like mine. Maybe it was a conversation.
You opened up.
You shared something vulnerable.
And the response you received was hurtful—or you received no response at all, and you felt invalidated and misunderstood.
Things like this that can crush our confidence and keep us held back.
However, there’s confidence available for the one who is ready to receive it. A list of Bible verses would have helped me through the embarrassment and self-doubt that came rushing in afterward—if I had thought to look for them. Not only would God’s Word have helped me, but remembering Jesus living in me as my source of strength and confidence would have helped me not feel so alone in the hard emotions that followed my disastrous performance.
Jesus is our source of help when we feel trapped in doubt and can’t seem to find confidence to get up again and keep on going.
7 Bible Verses for Confidence
Do you need some encouragement in this area? Here are 7 Bible verses for confidence that you can read and repeat. God’s word is powerful in filling our minds with truth. Consider repeating or praying these verses one a day for the next 7 days to help you when you lack confidence. (You may also be interested in this past article that includes other Bible verses for confidence: Praying 7 verses to equip you for life.)
If you struggle with a lack of confidence, you are not alone. When feelings of inadequacy get the best of you, pray and repeat these Bible verses for confidence to fill your mind with truth from God’s Word.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Hebrews 4:16 (NASB)
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NASB)
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
2 Corinthians 4:7 (NASB)
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves.
Isaiah 40:31 (NASB)
Yet those who wait for the Lord
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.
Philippians 4:13 (KJV)
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Philippians 1:6 (NASB)
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
We Can Be Confident!
We can be confident that God has a good work for us to do, and He will perfect it. Perfect means complete, not mistake-free. Our setbacks grow us and help us learn what we need to understand in order to step out in confidence and do the work He calls us to do.
Did I ever perform again? Yes, I did—many times—and in front of large audiences. I learned confidence doesn’t come from how well I perform or even from what someone else thinks about my performance. It comes from Christ. He’s the source of confidence we can stand on!

Perfectionism Pinpoint
Perfectionism involves a lot of fear, and one of the big ones is the fear of moving forward. Here are a few reasons why perfectionism makes it hard to move ahead and a few thoughts meant to encourage you.
•You are afraid you will make mistakes. (However, you will and learn from them. I know it’s easier said than done, but we have Jesus to help us grow in this area.)
•You have a fear of the unknown. (God is the only One who sees the big picture that shows the end result. We just have to keep taking little steps until we get there.)
•You can’t see the path ahead of you and lack clear direction. (God in His wisdom seems to only reveal the plans a little at a time. Look just ahead instead of trying to see around the corner.)
•You are afraid you don’t have what it takes. (It’s not about you, it’s about God’s power within you. See this post.)
•You are afraid of what others will think of you. (It’s not about what others think about you, it’s about what God thinks about you. See this post.)
•You are afraid to move out of your comfort zone. (Sometimes moving forward with something feels like jumping off the edge of a cliff. There’s Someone who will catch you and keep you from falling if you will trust Him. Psalm 37:24 tells us, “When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.”)
Don’t let perfectionism and the fears it wields stop you from doing what God is calling you to do!
Let’s Pray
Dear Lord, we thank you and praise you for living in our hearts today through your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank you for being the Father that leads and guides us, pushing us forward into the unknown when we’d rather stay in our comfortable place. Help us to see you holding our hands as we take that leap of faith into what you are calling us to do. In Jesus name, Amen.
